Kayaking in the Haida Gwaii Exploring the Queen Charlotte Islands

9 nights

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ninstints and dive into the culture and atmosphere of Haida Gwaii by paddling the waters of Gwaii Haanas National Park.

This trip focuses on the biologically and culturally rich waters at the southern end of Moresby Island. This island chain tails off into the sea, and as a result, the area is bathed by the open Pacific and active currents scour the coastline. You will explore Sgan Gwaii (Anthony Island) and the abandoned Haida village of Ninstints, set in a protected cove. It displays the largest collection of totems on the West Coast that are still standing in their original site.

Day 3-8

Rose Harbour to Burnaby Island

Early in the trip you will be kayaking the waters around Burnaby Island, and if the tides are right a visit to Burnaby Narrows, known for its rich concentration of intertidal life. Heading south from Burnaby Island, you will cross Skincuttle Inlet, and pass the abandoned Haida village of Haigi, long since deserted as a result of a smallpox epidemic. Rounding Benjamin Point you will see Kunghit Island, the southernmost island of the Haida Gwaii archipelago. Turning into Houston Stewart Channel, separating South Moresby Island from Kungit Island, you will pass Rose Harbour – an abandoned whaling station – and begin heading west to the open Pacific.

Near the end of the kayak tour there will be a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ninstints (SGang Gwaay Linagaay) on Anthony Island. Tufted and horned puffins, rhinoceros auklets, pigeon guillemots, and many more species of sea birds are often seen on the exposed rocks and islets between South Moresby and Anthony Islands.

Unless weather dictates otherwise there will generally be a move to a new campsite every day of this tour. The actual kayaking route depends on the weather, sea conditions, and abilities of the group, and while each kayak tour is unique, all are spectacular.
Meals Included: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
