Home to the BBC programme "The Great Bear Diary", Hallo Bay in the Katmai National Park of Alaska is easily accessible from Anchorage and must be seen to be believed. Just a short flight from Homer along the Alaska Peninsula which is part of "The Ring of Fire" an active chain of volcanoes. If you must, you can go for a day trip, but please, make the time to spend a couple of nights at the camp.
Hallo Bay Camp is in one of the highest natural concentrations of brown bears in Alaska. Anytime from May to October, Hallo Bay provides excellent opportunities to view the bears. It is a food-rich, natural habitat so bears do not need to leave the area. During June and July bears are usually seen feeding on grass and digging for clams; that typically is the time when you will see the cubs. August and September are the times when the bears are generally feasting on salmon.
Bear viewing is on foot; accompanied by your naturalist guide, you will walk through the wilderness, grass, forest and beach. It is not difficult walking but you will be on your feet for 4 - 5 hours a day.

Tours can be 5 hours, or 1, 2 or 3 nights and operate between May 15 and September 25.
2 night tours depart on Monday and Wednesday. 3 nights leave on a Friday.

Hallo Bay
You will stay in comfortable heated cabins. There are five Hansen Weatherport design guest cabins. Four cabins are quite large (12' x 20') and the fifth cabin is designed for the single traveller, being somewhat smaller in size. All the cabins are heated, have wooden floors, windows with screens, a small sink and vanity, table/chairs, gas lighting and beds/bedding.
