Bears, Bears and More Bears British Columbia Wildlife Watching Holiday

Visiting Klemtu and Bella Coola, this trip is best done in late August to early October when the salmon are running back into the rivers and the bears are feasting. If you are lucky, you will see black, grizzly and the rare white Sprit bear all in the most natural of circumstances. For the rest of the summer, there is still plenty of wildlife to be seen and the area itself is worth the journey.
You will visit the heart of the Great Bear rainforest, a remote area where you will not find smart hotels but rather friendly people and remarkable wildlife. Bella Coola is on the mainland and can be reached by road from Vancouver but Klemtu is a remote First Nations Village with a population of around 300 and only accessible by air or boat. If you choose Klemtu, you will be one of only a handful of visitors; the hotel has 6 bedrooms and facilities are very limited. However these limitations are more than compensated by the warmth of the welcome and the astounding wildlife.

Vancouver to Bella Coola
Fly from Vancouver Airport north to Bella Coola where you will spend the next 3 nights. The next morning will be spent drifting down the Atnarko River looking out for grizzly bears. The rest of the day will be free to explore the small town of Bella Coola. The next day you will either hike some of the local trails looking for bears accompanied by a knowledgeable guide or snorkel in the river with the salmon that are the lifeblood of this area, again escorted by a local guide.
Bella Coola to Shearwater Lodge
Today you will have your own private chartered float plane to fly you from Bella Coola to Shearwater Lodge where you will spend one night.
Shearwater Lodge to Klemtu
An early departure by boat will take you to Klemtu. The next 3 remarkable days will be spent watching the Kermode bears and with luck the unique Spirit bear. This white bear is no relation to the polar bear but rather a black bear with a rogue gene which makes it white! Other wildlife abounds, you might well hear wolves or see their tracks and whales are commonplace. Bear viewing is done on foot which gives you probably the most personal way to meet the bears but a certain agility is required.
NB: Klemtu is a dry community but wine and beer is served at the lodge.
Klemtu to Vancouver
Bid a reluctant goodbye to the wilderness, take an amphibious plane to Port Hardy and regular flight on to Vancouver.
