Salt Water Fishing
The highly accessible waters of Vancouver Island offer world-class fishing for all five species of Pacific Salmon: Chinook (King), Coho, Pink, Chum, and Sockeye as well as healthy stocks of Steelhead. Abundant stocks of herring and anchovy, a highly successful hatchery system and an aggressive habitat reclamation program ensure healthy returns each year. Anglers favour mooching and trolling, while some enjoy great success casting from strategically placed fishing piers.
Vancouver Islands craggy coastline ensures plenty of protected waters for those who bring their own boats and there is an abundance of fishing lodges with licensed guides ready and willing to hook you the 'big one'. In addition to salmon, fishers have great luck bringing in yellow-eye rockfish to 8 kilograms (18 lbs.), lingcod to 20 kilograms (45 lbs.), and halibut to 200 kilograms (440 lbs.).
Fly-Fishing has always been popular on the lakes and streams of Vancouver Island. Whether the focus is on trout, bass or the wily steelhead, fly-fishing is popular throughout the twelve months of the year. Increasing in popularity is the sport of fly-fishing for salmon off the kelp-lined shores of Vancouver Island. There are few experiences in the life of the outdoor sportsman equal to taking a 7 kilogram (15 lbs.) coho on a bucktail and light fly gear - except perhaps hooking into a huge 22 kilogram (50 pound) chinook on the very same gear!
Freshwater Fishing
An airplane flight over Vancouver Island reveals an absolute myriad of fresh water lakes, streams and rivers, most accessible; most containing rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, brown trout, steelhead and/or bass, just to name a few. The Yukon and Ontario are also great for freshwater fishing. Lake fishing tends to be most successful shortly after spring thaw right through until the autumn freeze-up in the higher lakes. In the low lakes, fishing is best in the spring and autumn months. Steelhead fishing can be good during the summer months in some river systems, however the peak runs tend to be during the fall, winter and spring months. Most lake and river systems are accessible to differing degrees and there are always licensed guides and outfitters available to ensure a safe, quality outdoor experience.
